Daniel HOPKINS30 was born before 12 May 1845 in UK Wales - Llanilid, Glamorganshire (Crown Inn).681 There is some confusion (in my mind at least) regarding the birth, baptism and death of this Daniel. Grave 73 in the Llanilid Churchyard indicates he died in 1869 and was two years old. However, the baptism records indicate a baptism in 1845. And there is a 'Daniell' in the 1851 Census. A Daniel also appears in the 1861 Census, aged 16 years, There may have been two Daniel's; the first dying before the second between 1861 and 1867. He was awarded British empire Medal (B.E.M.) in Australia - Renmark SA : David Edward Hopkins was awarded the British Empire Medal for his service to the community. It was awarded for his services to music in South Australia as a band conductor with the Australian army during world war two and the Renmark Silver Citizens band that won many band competitions. David died on 14 February 1990 at the age of 98. He was buried in 1990 in Adelaide SA - North Brighton. Uncle David was a gentle and considerate man. Indeed he and his brother Tom were a stark contrast ; akmost the bushie and the gentleman image. He immersed himself in music and when they lived in Renmark SA, he was the 'revered' conductor of the Renmark Silver Citizens band for many years. He had an amazing 'ear' for music, tuned pianos by ear and said any discordant sound actually hurt him physically. An example of this was a Cuckoo clock that hung in their lounge. It cuckooed out of tune so he dismantled it and re-turned it to perfect pitch. He was a keen 'family man' and paid close attention to and demonstrated interest in any family member. Anybody who called was always treated to a warm welcome. Long time conductor of the Renmark Silver citizens band. Band conductor Spouse: Mabel 'May' M PARROTT (HOPKINS)-529. "Aunty May" was one of 'nature's people'. She was warm, engaging and interested with a keen sense of humour. She was a huge support to Uncle David. As a citizen of Renmark she was highly respected and much loved by all of the Hopkins family. The author regularly 'called in' as Renmark was on the road between Adelaide and Wentworth. Later when working in the Riverland area she took great interest in our young family and supported us as the only family we had nearby. David Thomas HOPKINS30,692 was born on 18 April 1848 in UK Wales - Llanilid, Dist. of Bridgend Glamorganshire.693 He was baptized on 11 June 1848 in UK - Wales - Llanilid, Glamorganshire.694 He was also known as David Hopkin in 1851.694 David immigrated about 1877 to AUSTRALIA.695 Between 1893 and 1937 he was a Haulage Contractor, Guest House operator "Stanwell House",& etc in Stanwell Park near Woolongong NSW.696 The story of David Thomas Hopkins and his wife Mary Elizabeth Northey is well documented in the book "The History of Stanwell Park" by M Adams. The pertinent sections of this book are included as attachments within the Media items related to this Family (see Family Photos) His illiteracy is probably related to the fact that in the 1861 Welsh Census, his siblings are listed by occupation or as 'Scholar' while he at 13 years is listed as 'Farmer's Son'. Of course his older brothers Daniel and George may also have been illiterate. not so his younger siblings [ however advice from Glamorgan Family History Society researcher David Lewis suggests young children - not working were listed as 'scholars ] . There is no criticism intended in reference to his literacy status but it has for some time been a mystery how an older child was illiterate or that some children were formally educated and others not. It is supposed that he was needed as the helper to his father on the farm. It appears at time of signing brother's (Thomas snr) Marriage cert he couldn't write. He was a Caretaker / leaseholder in Stanwell Park (occupying the house built by Sir Thomas Mitchell the explorer) in 1893. David died on 19 June 1937 at the age of 89 in Helensburgh. NSW. He was buried on 19 June 1937 in Sydney - Worarnora. Grave : Woranora Cemetery NSW - Sutherland Grv 205 Sect 3 MME Parents: William HOPKINS-88 and Mary MORGAN (HOPKINS)-89. Spouse: Living. Spouse: Mary Elizabeth NORTHEY (HOPKINS)-513. Mary Elizabeth NORTHEY (HOPKINS) and David Thomas HOPKINS were married on 23 July 1883 in Sydney NSW - Wesleyan Parsonage, Cleveland St..697 References to the family by Michael Adams and press notices indicate that David & Elizabeth were significant in the very small 'village' of Stanwell Park. Lawrence Hargraves the 'pioneer of flight' lived and conducted his experiments at Stanwell Park. He is acknowledged as the inspiration for the Wright Brothers designs for the first heavier than air flight in 1903. Indeed Hargraves, using his box kites designs and the winds of Stanwell Park was lifted from the gound by a tethered kite. The story of Hargraves is beautifully written in a book 'Wind beneath his wings, Lawrence Hargraves Stanwell Park" by Michael Adams. David Thomas "Dave" HOPKINS was born on 15 August 1911 in Broken Hill NSW. As a young teenager he left home and went to live with a family at Merbein. It is said that family wanted to adopt him. He was a Fruit Grower - Merbein. He died in a road accident while driving a tractor on 11 February 1969 at the age of 57 in Merbein South Vic. I guess it is somewhat a cruel twist of fate that he died as he did in a road accident when driving his tractor. a machine he was most skilled at using when off the road. Dave was buried in February 1989 in Merbein Vic.698 Grave : AL 38 [Photo] Uncle David was a laconic, 'gentleman of nature'. He understood about the environment before the word became popular. He'd explain facts about nature in a way that made it a great story. He battled with a fruit block at Merbein, established it from bare ground and it seemed an almost regular event that he'd be wiped out by hail, diseases and poor prices. He always slept outside on a camp bed, no matter the season or the weather and didn't seem to mind the ferocious mosquitoes. He had a great sense of humour and rarely seemed to get annoyed or angry. He had a 'slow fuse' when things went wrong, but when he exploded it was better to find a quiet place somewhere. For a couple of years as a young teenager I drove his tractor while he put the picked Sultana grapes on the trailer. He used to chide me that he'd never make a profit while I kept eating grapes and when I knocked out a strainer post with the tractor he seemed to think it was amusing. He always had a couple of sheep dogs wandering along with him, sleeping under his bed or waiting for him wherever he was. They understood his gestures and whistles and knew when they were in trouble. He worked at the Yelta sheep yards with his dogs during sheep sales. Parents: Thomas James (Jnr) HOPKINS-10 and Margaret KERIN (HOPKINS)-11. Spouse: Mary Mabel MCDONALD (HOPKINS)-571. He was also known as George Hopkin in 1839.670,708,709,710,711 "Parents Spoke English & Welsh" a phrase found in reference to their son Edmund. About 1861 he was a Blacksmith, Farrier, Vet, Haulage contractor, Guest House Owner in Moved :- Pentre, Ystradyfodwg, Rhondda - added 's' to Hopkin. George immigrated before 1893 to AUSTRALIA - possibly / questionable.712 The History of Stanwell Park included the following: "For a while his (David Thomas') two brothers George & William joined him, helping to renovate the old but solid cottage into a boarding house." This indicates he definitely travelled to Australia, his arrival details are unknown. It is likely to have been prior to 1893. His residence in Australia is somewhat contentious. His youngest daughter Catherine is reported to have died in Wales in 1900. It is possible he had returned to Wales prior to this time. Did he leave his family behind (David Thomas is reported to have left a son) ? In 1893 George's three youngest children (if alive) would have been 13 yrs, 15 yrs & 16 yrs respectively. However this George had a son George. Is it possible the above reference from Stanwell Park history should indicate a newphew to David Thomas rather than a brother. No records of arrival in Assisted Immigration for NSW or Queensland have been found.(Sept 2005) About 1893 he was a Builder in Stanwell Park NSW (questionable). I'm not sure if I remember or was Between 1949 and 1983 he was a Miner in Broken Hill NSW. Raymond died on 10 June 2006 at the age of 83 in Wagga Wagga NSW. For a few weeks after leaving Broken Hill, uncle Ray & Aunty Pat lived in a flat in Tumut. It wasn't long before Uncle Ray needed to go to hospital in Tumut. Eventually he was transferred to Wagga hospital where he died. I spoke to him by telephone a couple of times and he was full of praise for the hospital staff and seemed very comfortable. The second time I spoke to him it was obvious he was either fading or on heavy medication. However, he retained his sense of humour. Raymond Barlow Hopkins was the last male of his generation and at the time of his death was survived by his two sisters Lorna Spannagle and Joan Blackshaw. His second name 'Barlow' was his grandparents surname on his father's side. I'm not sure if I remember or was told that when on leave just after the War he stayed at our place and each afternoon took me to the 'local' (Hotel) for an outing. He regularly went camping with us to the river. One time when my father had to leave the camp and return to Broken Hill, Uncle Ray drove our car home. As we were about to climb a hill somewhere the gear stick of the 1939 Vauxhall came out. While it was amusing later it wasn't at the time. He managed to fit it back and my job was to hold it in place as we drove along. He was a very fit 80 Year old and after he retired gave up the beer and the cigarettes not an easy task for someone who always had a beer after work on the way home. He has always been a staunch Union supporter and didn't have a lot of time for the bosses. We had many arguments about politics etc., over the years but never came to blows. Grave : Broken Hill (same grave as his father) - no inscription [Photo]755 Thomas Hopkins 'Old Tom', was an interesting character. Putting aside his love of gambling and a cold beer which caused some family crises he was always the source of amusement in the family. He rode his bicycle only fast enough to prevent it falling over and is famous for hitting the Murton Street bus with his car when failing to give way. As a bushman he was second to none. When the family went camping he always dragged his 'swag' a distance away. He hated nothing more than anybody even touching his fishing lines but he always caught more fish than anybody and alone he'd shoot more ducks than the rest combined. As a consequence he was often the butt of jokes by the sons in law in particular. They often hung objects such as shoes on his fishing line and once they took all of the lead shot out of his shot gun cartridges. He was a water diviner and well sinker. He loved to demonstrate to the grand kids and see who could divine water. An incident is well remembered which at least for some gave him hero status. A man fell, and was killed falling to the bottom of a well at Bootra Bore near Broken Hill. As the well timbers were rotten nobody would attempt to retrieve his body. Following the pleas of the family he went to the bottom of the well and retrieved the body at considerable risk to his own life. He always made the grand kids welcome and was interested in their activities and enjoyed nothing more than telling stories about Broken Hill history. He didn't drink a cup of tea he 'called it' because he liked it black and 'piping hot'. The day he died he asked his son Ray to collect his winnings from the SP bookmaker. His immigration to Australia is to be seriously questioned in view of the death / burial records from Wales The following record is the only 'possible but unlikely' arrival which is included as an aid to further research. She died on 13 March 2009 at the age of 87 in Adelaide Repatriation Hospital. Until Christmas 2008, Joan had been quite well and certainly very independent. She travelled to Adelaide for Christmas and her illness emerged while there. Once hospitalised she remained there until her passing. Joan was buried on 19 March 2009 in Broken Hill NSW - with spouse Alan Blackshaw. The funeral service for Joan Blackshaw was conducted at the St Peter & Paul Catholic Church at North Broken Hill. This was fitting as this was 'her' church and she had also been very involved with the attached school ( now closed) assisting in many different ways while her children attended. Many family and friends attended : Pat Spannagle ( wife of nephew Peter) played the organ, Peter Spannagle (nephew) and Mary Martin ( long time family friend) were the readers. I ( Trent Niemann) was privileged to read a poem especially selected for the day : Miss Me But Let Me Go Miss me a little, but not too long For this is the journey we all must take When you are lonely & sick at heart The service was concluded with the song "Danny Boy" ... a song loved by many of the family and frequently sang on happier occasions. Aunty Joan was laid to rest with Uncle Alan at the Broken Hill Cemetery. The family were the Pall Bearers. While a sad time it was a chance for many 'old' & getting older cousins to get together and Aunty joan would have been pleased about that. Phyllis Muriel HOPKINS (KIRKWOOD) was born in 1910 in Broken Hill NSW. She was educated about 1916 in Broken Hill NSW - North School. She was a housewife in Melbourne - East Ivanhoe in 1956. Coming from Broken Hill we ( Trent Niemann) had never seen the like of two story houses with toilets inside and electric washing machines etc. The house even had a 'bar room' where Graeme and I tested a variety of alcoholic beverages. I saw my first Television in Melbourne in about 1955. Phyllis was a housewife in Lorne Vic - Holiday home in 1957. Lorne was a dream like experience. I couldn't 'get over' the size of and the number of trees and the amount of rain. The surf was a new experience and early- on was 'dumped' many times. Horse riding on the beach was exhilarating as was hitchhiking along the coast with Graeme. The greated drama was the result of climbing through a window (messing about) and knocking a plaque from the wall which broke into 'a million pieces' . I had to face Uncle Phil when he came down for the week end. He chided me very mildly and only later did I discover he bought it in Italy for 250 pounds ... a small fortune in the 1950's. She was a housewife, dog breeder in Melbourne - Beaumauris in 1990. She died on 18 May 1992 at the age of 82 in Melbourne Vic. Phyllis was buried after 22 May 1992 in Melbourne Vic.774 Grave : Cremated, ashes spread around her last home Aunty Phyllis lived in Melbourne but from time to time flw to Broken Hill for a family visit. She fascinated us Broken Hill kids with her jewellery and always looked like a model in a shop window ! When my Brother Grant needed medical treatment he regularly went to Melbourne. Aunty Phyllis was a second mother to him and I sometimes got to 'tag along' for the trip. Aunty Phyllis always treated us like her own kids and visits to Melbourne were really special. It was during those years I developed a bond with her and in latter years she came to stay with us for a while at Stockport and Berri. She helped me with painting and gardening. She loved to yarn about the past and play cards. Parents: Thomas James (Jnr) HOPKINS-10 and Margaret KERIN (HOPKINS)-11. Spouse: Philip James "Phil" KIRKWOOD-562. Grave : RC Sec XB R13 Gr36 [Photo] My image of Aunty Edna is in the kitchen with a horde of kids around her, flour everywhere and food either going into or being taken out of the wood fired oven. She loved kids and cooking. She also loved 'Housie' (a Broken Hill term for Bingo) and regularly attended and seemed always to be winning. Staying at her home in Silverton was always a great adventure. The lack of electricity made living with kerosine lamps a special event. Anybody moving through a house with 'kero' or 'Tilley' lamps conjured up images of ghosts for a young person ... it did for me. Sleeping three or four kids to a bed was also a special event.
