Elizabeth Ann "Elisa / Eliza" KERIN (FITZGERALD)⁹⁹³ was born about 1850 in IRELAND - County Clare. She was a in Burra SA about 1865. She was a in Broken Hill NSW about 1887. In other places in this record there are descriptions of Broken Hill. However, for those who have never travelled the road to that city I hope the photos attached to this section will indicate the sort of country over which my ancestors travelled to reach Broken Hill.

It would seem most of our relatives from South Australia travelled by rail; soon after the rail was complete from Terowie to Broken Hill in about 1886 - 1887.
Earlier travellers and work-seekers often pushed a wheelbarrow with their possessions from Burra to Broken Hill. For some time this feat was replicated as an event to remember the efforts of the early Broken Hill workers.

Rail was used to carry the ore from Broken Hill to Port Pirie on the South australian coast, where it was smeltered and shipped all over the world. Broken Hill made Australia rich.

Even in an air-conditioned vehicle some find the journey tedious; in summer it would have been distressing indeed and not a journey for the faint hearted. It wasn't a day light journey in summer before air conditioned cars. Unsealed roads, numerous Kangaroos and unreliable vehicles made it a trying journey. However in those days ( 1940's & 50's ) a couple of stops to 'boil the billy' ( light a fire & make a cup of tea ) in a sandy gum ( eucalyptus) creek was quite an enjoyable break. DEATH OF MRS. FITZGERALD
AN AGED PIONEER

The death occurred of MRS FITZGERALD, of 160 Mica St, about 6.00 O'clock on Wednesday morning last after an illness lasting several weeks. The late Mrs Fitzgerald was born in COUNTY CLARE, IRELAND in c1851, and left for Australia at an early age of 14 years, arriving in SOUTH AUSTRALIA, she married at the BURRA SOUTH AUSTRALIA, in 1872, and later arrived in Broken Hill c 1887, remaining here until the time of her death.
There were 14 children in the family, of which 8 members are still living. JAMES & EDWARD of PERTH WA, GERALD of Railwaytown [ Broken Hill], JOHN & LUCY who resided with their late mother, MRS MCCARTHY OF KALGOOLIE WA, MRS BURKE OF PERTH, and MARY, who has recently arrived from PERTH on a visit to her mother. MR JAMES FITZGERALD predeceased his wife by 9 years. GERALD, EDWARD & PAT FITZGERALD at present of Broken Hill are brothers-in-law.
The funeral took place on Thursday leaving deceased's late residence 160 Mica St., at 11.00 am., a large number of friends following the remains. The Rev Fr. Brennan read the last rites at the graveside. The pallbearers were messrs:- W Kelly, W Hogan, A McCafferty, J Sly (Snr), P.J. McCarthy and J St Clair ??? D B Manglesdorf Undertaker.
She was buried on 4 June 1925 in Broken Hill NSW. Grave : Broken Hill [Photo] We only 'know' Elizabeth as a sister to Patrick because the family in Broken Hill referred to her as such. This is a fairly secure assumption.

This was about the same time Patrick & Euphemia Kerin also moved.
A short account of events in Broken Hill stated the following : -
1888-The first live Theatre was opened at W.J. Cummins's Theatre Royal Hotel on August 27. Broken Hill was declared a municipality on September 22. Richard Piper, underground manager of the Proprietary Company became first Mayor.

Barnett Harris rebuilt the Duke of Cornwall Hotel as a two story stone and brick structure.
1889-The Gas Company began supplying its consumers, and Argent Street was illuminated by gas in April.

The first electric light plant to operate in the township supplied electricity for the York hotel in September; a 3 candle-power arc lamp was erected on one of the hotel's towers, and interior lighting was installed. The B.H.P. had introduced electric lighting at the mines in 1887,when Rasp and McCulloch shafts and the smelters, were lit up.
According to a death notice for Elizabeth Kerin [ see notes for Elizabeth Kerin] two of her children were Mrs McCarthy of Kalgoolie and Mrs Burke of Perth. The only possible children to fit this criteria are Annie & Honorah aka Nora or Norah. If this report is correct it would put the stated records on Norah in doubt. She was generous beyond her means to her grandchildren whom she encouraged to 'call in' if they were near her home. She always had a lolly or treat and loved to chat. If she wasn't in the house it was certain she would be chatting 'over the back fence'. It wasn't unusual to arrive at her home and find her leaning over the front fence chatting to the passers by. Indeed leaning on the front fence was a main form of entertainment in Broken Hill, almost everybody did it!

Philip James "Phil" KIRKWOOD was born on 12 July 1905 in Corrigin WA. He was a Managing Director, "Mindrill" a mine drilling equipment manufacturer. Uncle Phil always made people feel special. He spoke to kids as if they had something worthwhile to say.
However, he believed that nothing was achieved without unstinting effort and he demanded this from others as well as himself. He was really tough on his own children.
He was a very successful businessman but a generous person. He brought one of the first transistor radios from hong Kong and gave one each to my brother Grant, & I. He arranged for a visit to his factory and assigned his driver to look after me.
He was well known for his very fast driving. A trip to the beach home at Lorne was one of the scariest events imaginable. He always owned new cars which was a departure from my experience. He died on 14 August 1965 at the age of 60 in Melbourne Vic.
