An impressive grave / monument for William Barlow 1833 - 1876 and spouse Elizabeth 1832 - 1907 was found in the White Hills [Bendigo] cemetery. There is no known connection except at one time 'our' James and Elizabeth must have been in Victoria as a child's death James is recorded1861 at Kyneton Vic. And a another son Joshua was born & died at Whit, Vic .
It appears the family moved to Golbourn NSW about 1864-5
He was a Gold Miner - was Silk Weaver at time of marriage. He died on 5 August 1911 at the age of 79 in Broken Hill NSW - Record found. James was buried on 7 August 1911 in Broken Hill NSW - Meth 44 Gr 52 no headstone.33,34,35 Grave : Meth 44 Gr 52 - no headstone [ photo ref bd] There are no known anecdotes etc., regarding James Barlow. However it appears from the records available that after his marriage the family emigrated to NSW, somewhere South of Sydney, Woolongong and Golbourn seem the most likely as Olivia is supposed to be buried in Golbourn. He was only married for 13 years before the death of Olivia. He was therefore a relatively young man (34) when she died. There are no records of other marriages or liaisons. One assumes he raised the children alone. William his eldest surviving son would have been 13 at the time. He moved to Broken Hill maybe following his daughter Mary, who was married to Thomas Hopkins (Snr.)
His story is a tragic tale of family deaths, but not unusual for the times.

Mary Ann BATH (SANDFORD) was born on 2 October 1887 at Dist Ang? - Angaston? in Sa - Notts Well.49 Notes from the Mercer Family The Baths were known as River Rats, as a lot of the men who worked along and on the river with the paddle boats dug there houses in the banks of the Murray river, the banks very high in many places, they had to put high extended tops over there
chimneys, so people would not fall down the holes into the fireplaces, and on many occasions the river would flood, and the families would get washed out, it must have been hard for the women folk when this occured when there men folk were away working up river. But they redug into the banks when it dried out and rebuilt.

· Name: Joseph Murray BATH
· Birth: 27 JAN 1900 in Markaranka, Near Morgan,
· Death: 1982
Note: Joseph spent most of his life along the Murray River, some time on "Belmore Station" on the Anna Branch, near Wentworth, he had a property near Wentworth for some time, then was care taker for the Wentworth Caravan Park, and was last heard of
as living with his daughter Mrs J McDougall near Edenhope.
Father: Russell BATH b: 21 DEC 1853 in "Glenpara" Mount Crawford, Sth Aust.
Mother: Mary Anne CAVENDER b: 28 FEB 1856 in Adelaide, South Australia She died before 1988 at the age of 101 in Renmark SA. Notes from the Mercer Family History - interesting practice:

They were discharged on Friday 11 April 1851. In the intervening period they completed the 1851 census held on the night of 30 March 1851. · Note: At the weekly meeting of the St Ives Board of Guardians held in the Board Room in the Workhouse on Wednesday, 12 May 1852, a resolution moved by Mr. William Cole and seconded by the Reverend J.A. Tillard was passed that the sum of 10 pounds be allowed for the emigration to Adelaide of John Bath and family, then residing at Swavesey in the St Ives Union. The "...sum was to be charged to Swavesey, being the Parish of the Settlement of such poor persons and that application be made to the Poor Board for there order therein. This was a reasonably regular practice at the time as it was cheaper in the long run for the Parish to pay for the emigration of Pauper families to the colonies than to continue to support them over a long period. · Note: On 4 October 1852, the family of John and Elizabeth Bath left Liverpool, England on board the ship "SHACKERMAXON" for the free colony of South Australia. The ship arrived in Adelaide on 19 January 1853. It was a difficult and unpleasant passage, as of the 696 passengers who embarked in Liverpool for the voyage, 63 of them, of whom 58 were children under the age of 14, died en route. Most of the children died from Scarletina (Scarlet Fever), while the adult deaths were mainly from Dysentry and one possible suicide. Fortunately none of the deaths were from the Bath family. Two of the children attended the school run by James Fawsett during the passage. Fawsett reported that Joseph , aged 12, could read and write, and William, aged 8, could do neither. Fawsett went on to comment that Joseph "now reads well, writes middling, ciphers in addition. Very irregular in his attendence, partly from M?ess". About William he wrote, "Very irregular in his attendece, no excuse for it, & no progress". · Note: In December of that year, there last child, Russell was born.
