Daniel BYRNES144 was born on 22 October 1829 in IRELAND - County Wexford Gorey Inch. Civil Parish in the Catholic Parish of Arklow, Wicklow. He was a in IRELAND - County Wicklow, Ballykeane about 1857. He emigrated on 11 April 1858 from Uk, England, Liverpool on the 'Frenchman' They made their way from Ireland to Liverpool and departed on the 'Frenchman' on 11th April 1858.* They arrived in Adelaide on 1/7/ 1858*.
* There is some dispute regarding the dates : 1/6/1858 - Sept 1858

After a short time in Adelaide they trekked along the Murray River to 'McLeod's Crossing ' which was the original name for Wentworth. They then trekked and made their early life in Australia around Menindie 'Fort' Bourke
It is said they met Bourke & Wills who were on their expedition attempt to cross Australia from South to North. In spite of the fact it was a well equipped, perhaps too well equipped expedition, they both perished at Coopers Creek after a series of 'unlucky' coincidences and poor communication.
At about the same time john McDouall Stuart was undertaking the same adventure but he travelled light & fast. Even so it almost killed him as well, but he was successful.
It is said Bourke & Wills left some possessions with Daniel Byrnes which he returned to their respective families some time later.

In 1860 Daniel was a Carrier / Lesee in River Darling - Wentworth to Bourke. James Manning Byrnes is not in my records - included for possible future reference:

After a short time in Adelaide they trekked along the Murray River to 'McLeod's Crossing ' [ by now "The Junction" which was the original name for Wentworth ( Wentworth was named in 1859 ... in June 2009 we .. The Junction - Arumpo Station - Menindie - Compadore Station - NOT Fort Bourke ] and made their early life in Australia around 'Fort' Bourke & Menindee.
Occupation - Grazier [ not true says Rusheen Craig ' Homestead Lessee at a later date. first he had a carting business in Wentworth ] . They purchased Compador Station which is about 80 miles (abt 120 Km) south of Bourke ( not true says Rusheen Craig June 2009 ... ' visited / stayed but never purchased ' ) .

I believe that they had another child "Garratt Byrnes". Which would account for the usage of the name Garrett later (Sylvester Garrett Byrnes son of Sylvester & Sarah)
The article also mentions another brother "John Thomas"...
Daniel Byrnes held the licence to the "Lake Victoria Hotel" (Lake Victoria near Wentworth) in 1885. His son Garrett held the license to "Darling Hotel" (Letheo near Wentworth) 1892 - 1894
Sylvester Byrnes held the license to "Harp of Erin" (Netley Station, Darling River between Pooncarie & Menindee) in 1882 - 1885. Sylvester Byrnes held the licese to "Pooncarra Hotel" (Pooncarie) 1893 - 1896

Garrett Byrnes - Publican Darling Hotel 1892-1896/7.
His daughter Cecelia recalled, "He was a great big figure of a man; ask anybody the length of the Darling and they'll be able to tell you all about him." Cecelia was 96 years old at the time - so we didn't try to follow her advice.

Garrett was the second son of Daniel and Ellen Byrnes (see Pine-tree Hotel). Soon after the Burke and Wills exploratory expedition had left their excess baggage with the Byrnes family, the Byrnes followed them into Menindie. [ Rusheen Craig June 2009 - raises doubts regarding the authenticity of this fact ]
It was in this tiny settlement that Garrett was born on 22nd December,1860.
He was to spend all his life close to or along the Darling River, as a Contractor, a Homestead Lessee, a Publican and a Grazier [ not a Grazier says Rusheen Craig ] . His first property in 1885 was a tiny 40 acres on the northern side of Lake Victoria, on the route to Adelaide. Here he met his wife-to-be Ellen O'Brien who was working with her uncle Thomas on the vast Lake Victoria Station.
The Lands Dept records show that Garrett held the Homestead Lease of Tarangara (Part of Para Run, present day Camborn) from 1886 to 1896. He built two houses there; Ellen and other family members had children there. Yet the Electoral records show Tarangara passing over to his father Daniel by 1893, while Garrett took out the Publican's License for the Darling Hotel in 1892.An additional complication was the location of the hotel. It was usually on the eastern side of the Darling River, on the Wentworth to Pooncarie road. Yet, according to the Gazette, when Garrett took out the license it appears to have been moved across the river to Tarangara on the western side. After three years, with Garrett still in charge, it resumed its original premises.
By 1896 Tarangara was sold, and Garrett had applied for the Homestead Lease on the back track Menindie to Wilcannia, 100 miles from Broken Hill and 30 miles from Menindie. He called it Erin, and his stock were branded with the shamrock.
Ten years later, he took over his brother John Thomas' 1897 HL Byrnesdale. In 1859 this area had been called Corega or Korkreiga and had been owned by the explorer John McKinley. It was Camp 36 on Burke and Wills' 1860 expedition, or Camp 37 on Becker's map; it includes the gorge in which Burke's Cave is situated.
Garrett's final property was the155,156 acre Glenariff, near Byrock, in the Bourke area. It carried 12,000 sheep, 60 head of cattle and 24 of Garret's much loved horses. Garret was returning from buying stock, when he took ill on board ship, was taken to Sydney Hospital, and died of enteric fever in February 1912, aged only 51 years. Having spent all his life in the outback, he is buried at Waverley cemetery, overlooking the ocean. ( Craig Rusheen, The History of the Byrnes Family, Unpublished.)

_______________________________________________________

The short life of Ellen Byrnes.

Ellen had been born to Daniel Byrne and Ellen nee Whyte at Ballykeane,
Wicklow, Ireland, on 11th April, 1858. The Byrnes family, 30 year old Daniel
and 28 year old Ellen, with their 2 year old son Sylvester and baby Ellen,
left their homeland Ireland in the "Frenchman" on the 1st July of that year.
Ellen would have only been 6 weeks old.

Arriving in Adelaide at the end of September, they headed for Wentworth on
the Darling River. As a two year old, young Ellen set off with her family
towards Bourke, only getting as far as Arumpo station when their plans were
changed by a two day visit of the Burke and Wills Exploratory Expedition in
September of 1860. A supply of food was cooked for them by Mrs Byrnes.
Shortly after the Party left Arumpo, Burke decided that desperate measures
were necessary to ease the weight of the overloaded waggons. The discarded
property was entrusted to the care of the Byrnes but the explorers were
never to return to collect it. The Byrnes either went with the Party to
Menindie, or followed soon after.

Christmas 1860 in Menindie must have been a time of great fun and festivity
for the Byrnes family, for just 3 days before, Ellen had given birth to
another baby boy that they were to call Garrett. What games there must have
been as 4 year old Sylvester found his perfect age match in George Paine,
and Ellen romped with two year old Eliza(beth) Paine. Then there were the
six or seven Maiden children whose ages ranged down from 18 years. A time of
perfect joy.

Disaster was to follow. On the 10th of January 1861, little two year old
Ellen was to lose her life by accidental burning. The circumstances
surrounding her death are unclear - the records of this period having been
lost. Perhaps there had been a moment's inattention from her mother being
distracted by young 4 year old Sylvester or the 19 day old baby Garrett. It
is not known if the father Daniel had returned from Wentworth where he had
happily registered the birth of his new son on the first day of January.

Born in the rolling emerald fields of Ireland. Rocked to sleep by the waves
under the ship as she crossed the world. Her first steps taken in a sunshine
land. Splashing in the the waters of the Darling on a hot day. Enfolded
always in the family's love. Then pain more than the body could bear.

The anguish.

The tiny body of Ellen Byrnes was lain to rest at Menindie the next day.
