Margaret Matilda "Maggie" DEVINE (MCKIMM) (RYDER) was born on 23 September 1859 in Bendigo Vic - White Hills.284,299 She is rumoured to have had a child in 1875 in Bendigo Vic. Sue Kelly provided a note that claimed Margaret Matilda had a child Isabella, when she was 16. Sue goes on to say that she subsequently married Alfred Turner in 1882 and had another four children.
That scenario is at odds with her marriage to Charles McKimm in 1878, except it is possble she had a child at 16.
This information is included because too often the family stories either turn out to be true, in part or in whole. Without documents (and even then), they should not be ruled out.
She died on 29 May 1940 at the age of 80 in Sydney - Nth. Manly, 2 Pittwater Rd.,.300,301 Death Certificate: The Niemann book 'A Niemann Family history '( Cafiso 1986) has a section on anecdotes related to Maggie Devine and her life. There is no way to confirm or dispute the claims about Charles McKimm being a less than perfect spouse but there are several missing and erroneous facts related in that section of the book. For example her spouse was McKimm not McKinnon, he died in 1936 in Sydney not in WA as the book claims.
Several of the missing facts have been filled in and are contained within this family record.
Andy Devine the American Actor is not related. He was born in the USA. However, I suspect the reference to an Actor may have been to Sydney George Devine who was well known under the stage name of Clement May .He was indeed the brother of 'Maggie'. It just proves as so often in this form of research that a germ of truth exists in most of the stories hadned down through the generations. Frequently these stories are a starting point for uncovering the facts and should never be dismissed.

However, Charles McKimm 'turned up' in Sydney. : Maggie had her last child to McKimm in 1900, Norman Ryder was born to Henry Ryder & Maggie in 1902. They married in 1908. Only a little more than a year after the birth of her last child to McKimm she was pregnant with Norman. Charles McKimm 'turned up' after her 1908 marriage to Ryder.
Maggie explained that she assumed Charles McKimm had died.

Antonio "Tony" DI DONATO was born on 12 June 1931 in ITALY - Ripacorbaria. He immigrated on 3 August 1952 to Adelaide SA - on the SS Castell Bianca. Tony DiDonato's story of making his life in Australia is one that has been repeated time and again by almost every generation of Australian history. For economic or reasons of oppression Australia appealed as a place of opportunity. For many their departure from their homeland meant they would never return to the home of their birth.
In Tony's case World War 2 left Europe in devastation.
His skills as a builder made him an ideal person to invite to the developing country.
He worked around Adelaide and eventually moved to the Riverland of South Australia where he purchased a fruit block near Moorook.
Growing fruit is a demanding and frequently unrewarding, but he was able to 'make a go of it' and raised his family of four daughters.
He kept a close interest in the Italian community and enjoyed nothing more than a get-together of any kind.
It was probably a disappointment that none of his daughters married into the Italian community but nonetheless he made his sons in law and their families most welcome. He was a Plasterer, cement worker, fruit grower. Tony died on 16 October 1997 at the age of 66 in Barmera SA. Spouse: Arthur August NIEMANN-103. Mabel Inglis DICKSON (NIEMANN) and Arthur August NIEMANN were married on 16 November 1904 in Melbourne Vic - St Andrew's Church, Carlton. A clock maker in Adelaide contacted Grant Niemann, who directed him to Trent Niemann. He had in his possession a clock which had been presented to Arthur August, by his work mates on the occasion of his marriage in 1904.
It is assumed that his brother who lived in Adelaide for some time 'inherited' the clock and at some time it had been disposed of into the marketplace.
Trent Niemann selected at random names from the White Pages for Victoria, sent off three letters ' just on spec' . Scott Niemann telephoned Trent and said he was related to Arthur August and that his father William Maxwell was a grandson of Arthur August.
Subsequently William 'Bill' Niemann contacted Trent by telephone. He says he remembers the clock. We exchanged a few bits'n pieces of family history. He was going to follow-up on the clock.

John DORMAN was born in February 1847 in Moonta SA - possibly.331 Little is known about the origins of the Dorman family. However, Dorman graves were found at Rochester Vic. and White Hills [Bendigo]. The headstone at White Hills gave origins as Derbyshire, England. [ John Dorman's family is thought to have been from Cornwall England.] The is no known connection between the Bendigo Dorman and our Moonta dorman family except they are both mining centres. Miners did travel between mining centres. There is for example a reference on a grave at White Hills to a family who moved to Burra SA.

There is another reference: Dorman John Born 1832 in the 1851 UK Census - probably not directly related. [Web site My Trees.com (Kindred Konnection Research Centre) - UK ]

Kathy DiLeo a descendant passed on the following:
He (Brian Price) has told me that I will not find where John Dorman came from as he was a bit of a mystery man - he also mentioned that John was a remittance man* - and Granny Triplett received money from England after John died - sort of like a pension - Not sure if this is correct - but he did say Ada Dorman (Brown/McCourt) gave him that information. I have John's father as Joseph - but on the Bussorah Merchant there is a William Dorman and wife 1848

*[A remittance man is one who is sent away from home to the Colonies - Australia, Canada or India, and paid a remittance to stay away. The reason given is 'so as not to embarass the family' but was sometimes because he was the second son and would not inherit the family wealth / land / business. He was sent becasue he had nothing 'useful' to do at home.]

Kathy DiLeo also indicated he was born in 1847 at Moonta. There is therefore some confusion about his exact origins. He was a Miner in Moonta SA - Cross Roads in 1882. A Brief History of the Copper Coast [ Moonta Kadina Wallaroo]
The district of Northern Yorke Peninsula [South Australia] was settled in the 1850s and used as winter pasture for the running of sheep. A head station was established on Wallaroo Bay and a landing pad laid on the water's edge to help load the bales of wool. This was adjacent to the small house built for the manager of the Wallaroo Run.
In the late 1850s the run was owned by the Scot, Capt. Walter Watson Hughes a former sea captain. He instructed his shepherds to keep a watch for any green stones as he had heard that there might be copper in the region. Shepherd, James Boor is credited with the find, adjacent to the run's shearing shed in the area now known as Wallaroo Mines. Four Cornish miners were brought over from Burra to test this first showing of copper. Costeen pits were dug and more miners came to develop the Wallaroo Mines. Soon after, Welsh smelters set up a smelting works at Port Wallaroo and the first of three jetties was built. A few months later another large find was made at Moonta and here the Cornish arrived in their thousands to work the copper mines.
The three towns of Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo and their surrounding satellite settlements grew as the wealth of the mines grew and demanded more labor. The Cornish were employed because they were the best hard rock miners in the established western world. They were recruited from Ballarat and Bendigo and from Cornwall itself. They not only brought their mining skills but also their culture, Methodism, their pasties and other delicacies, their love of singing, brass band music and their West Country speech patterns.
The region was the largest settled area outside of the capital of South Australia, Adelaide and as such, several local men became very influential in the political and the public service of the state. Kate Cocks, born at East Moonta, founded the British Empire's first Woman Police force here in South Australia.
The mines were a good training ground for the mining hierarchy in Australia and many prominent engineers and managers can be traced back to Moonta or Wallaroo Mines. Sixty years of mining activity brought great wealth to the state and the foundation of the University of Adelaide can largely be sourced back to the Wallaroo and Moonta Mines through its directors who endowed the university chairs.
After World War 1, the price of copper dropped considerably and in 1923, the mines at Moonta and Kadina closed. Soon after, the Wallaroo Smelting Works also closed. It was a disastrous time for the community who by then had a largely elderly work force who were not able to easily find alternative work. However the agricultural industry, waterworks and the grain & superphosphate shipping industry were able to take some of the out-of-work miners and smelters. Many others found work at Kalgoorlie, Boulder, Broken Hill, Charters Towers and later Mount Isa.
He died ( John Dorman) in a Mining Accident - Green's Shaft (leg severed by falling 'skip' & shock) on 13 June 1882 at the age of 35 in Moonta SA.332,333,334,335 John was buried after 14 June 1882 in Moonta SA.336 Grave : Row East 12 Grave No. West 571[Unmarked ] [photo] An inquest was held at in Moonta SA - at the home of Mr Pomeroy and a jury of 14 men. after 15 June 1882 Parents: Joseph DORMAN-4200 and unknown given DORMAN (UNKNOWN NEE)-4201.

Spouse: Elizabeth Jane LANGMAID / LANGMEAD (DORMAN)(TRIPLETT)-128. Elizabeth Jane LANGMAID / LANGMEAD (DORMAN)(TRIPLETT) and John DORMAN were married on 19 May 1873 in Moonta SA.337,338 Their Marriage certificate confirms most of the following information :
'When Elizabeth was 18 she married at the home of her parents Edwin & Elizabeth Langmead at Euko. The witnesses at the ceremony were her sister Emma ... and James Thomas' , thought to be Emma's future husband.
Life was challenging in Moonta during the 1880's. Many families were not so fortunate as the Dormans when looking at the infant death statistics for Moonta. As an example 153 children under the age of 1 year, were buried at Moonta in 1874. It did not get much better until 1878 and even then 133 died. By todays standards the figures were unacceptably high until 1910.

Grave : General B Row 3 Grave 18 [Photo]367 Emma Jane was born in an area known as "Moonta Mines" which was a copper mining town north west of Adelaide on the Yorke Peninsular.
Like most mining towns it was a desperate place. The Children's Cemetery is testimony to the diseases of the era.
Emma Jane escaped the fatal diseases but at the age of 5 her father John Dorman was killed in the mines.
Her mother was a washer woman / mangler and battled hard to raise her family of 6 children. It was probably fortunate that Mr Triplett and his six children joined the families together. Over the ensuing years they added another 6 children, although not all survived.
The family moved to Broken Hill where in 1896 she married Ernest James Niemann.

Emma Jane was well known as a strong, determined person. She was something of a Matriarch of the family who was an excellent manager in difficult times. Harry Niemann, her son claims she always had a pound in her purse, no matter how tough times were.
As she got older she had difficulties with her sight and once in Adelaide being attended by the eye specialist she said she had to get back to Broken Hill to look after her son (Cecil). After getting over the surprise by the Specialist she disclosed her son was 60 years old !
As usual for women of her time she was extremely modest. She would almost run to the clothes line if she had underwear drying when visitors called.
She loved to play cards and her sight seemed to improve once the cards hit the table.
