Wentworth
Crown Hotel in Wentworth
Wentworth sits on the junction of Australia's two mightiest rivers - the Murray and Darling.
It is the administrative centre of the sprawling Wentworth Shire, one of the largest municipalities in New South Wales, encompassing an area of 26,500 square kilometres or 2,616,926 hectares.
Captain Charles Sturt discovered the junction of Australia's two mightiest river systems - the Murray and Darling - in the 1830s paving the way for what was to become the thriving river port town of Wentworth.
The overlanders followed the explorers, using the routes along the river the drive their cattle to the Adelaide markets. The trail along the Murrumbidgee and Murray Rivers became so popular it became known as the Sydney/Adelaide 'highway'.
The junction stopover at the Murray/Darling junction became an established camp known as Hawdon's Ford.
Then came the squatters, establishing illegal reign over the land along both the Darling and Murray Rivers, expanding their holdings westwards from the blossoming Murrumbidgee grazing area and, at the same time, northeast from the South Australian settlements.
By the mid-1840s the junction settlement had become "McLeod's Crossing", named for the first residents of the fledgling settlement.
With the arrival of the river steamers in 1853, the small hamlet found itself ideally situated as an administrative and commercial centre for the untapped wealth of the vast outback.
For many years Sydney and Newcastle were the only ports in New South Wales to handle more cargo than Wentworth as the steamers brought a new sophistication to the rugged river towns. They carried the hopes and dreams of the communities they served for more than three quarters of a century.
Wentworth became a town on June 21, 1859, named for the New South Wales explorer and politician William Charles Wentworth.
The area was proclaimed a municipality on January 23, 1879.

Julie Humphris ( Mid north SA ) - 30/1/2010 Email
Willoughby Humphris was the youngest son of John & Eliza Humphris, he had a twin sister, Mary Anne; his oldest brother John was a wheat buyer and town clerk at Yongala; next brother was Edmund, married to Frederina Gotte, they were among the first settlers to arrive in Jamestown; next brother was Henry a Police Trooper stationed in a number of northern SA towns; then comes their sister Ruth who went to Port Lincoln; then Eliza married to Thomas James who farmed in the north for a while before going to Broken Hill; Mary Anne married and lived in Adelaide; and Willoughby who farmed at Pekina for a while before also going to Broken Hill. I have copies of Willoughby's Land Granrs, Mortgage etc.. I have never heard of 'Petoria' and would suggest it really is Pekina, in some old scratchy hand writing which is difficult to read.

Willoughby was born in 1856, his father died in 1870 and his mother in 1876, by 1877 ha was married at Wentworth NSW.. In 1878 his oldest child, son Rupert was born at Pekina SA, followed by Harrold and Roy in 1880 and 1882, then daughter Olive born 1885 at Wentworth and son Goulburn born and died January 1891, followed by Caroline who died in Broken Hill 21 February 1891.
When Olive was born, Caroline states that she [ie Caroline] was born at Gol-Goll NSW; on her Death Certificate, Willoughby states that she was born at Wentworth and her Mother's name was Frederina, this is not correct, her Mother was Lavinia Gotte, second wife of Joseph Henry Harris. Following Caroline's death, Willoughby married again, and produced two more sons, one of whom died in the first World War. In 1906 Willoughby was living in Chapple Street Broken Hill, from 1909 to 1916 at Abermain NSW, he died 1924, buried Kurri-Kurri, there is no headstone aon his grave.

Through a family contact, made some years ago I have compiled a Willoughby & Caroline Humphris family tree, in one branch down to the present generation.
I also have a family tree for Joseph Henry Harris and his two wives, Sophia Sargent and Lavinia Gotte, it is mostly down to the generation born 1890/1900, it is compiled from research done in Adelaide, Broken Hill and Wentwoth by a friend who was helping me to sort out the Humphris/Harris/Gotte connections. As you are researching the Harris family you may already have all this information.

1. James Harris bap 25/3/1778 Kingscliffe, Northamptonshire, dec prior to 1790
2. Mary bap 10/9/1779 " "
3. John 1783 " "
4. William 28/2/1783 " "
5 JOSEPH HARRIS 27/1/1787 " "
6. James 6/6/1790 " "
7. Thomas 25/12/1792 " "

He was transported as a convict in Sydney NSW - [arrived on the "Admiral Gambier 2"]606,607 4th March 1809: Along with his brothers James & William, Joseph was charged with sheep stealing at Weekly, Northampton. [ also reported as 6th March 1809.* ]
At their trial reported on 4th March 1809*, Joseph was convicted and the brothers acquitted. Joseph was sentenced to death but was reprieved 'before the judge left town'.
He was subsequently sentenced to transportation to New South Wales. He was transported on the "Admiral Gambier" which arrived in Sydney on 29/9/1811.
We can deduce from the above dates that he spent about two years in prison awaiting his transportation.

Joseph died in AUSTRALIA. The closest record I can find in NSW for his death is in Carcoar NSW 1876. The reference is 5616 /1876 Harris Joseph 88 years; this would make his birth date almost identical. He is ASSUMED ( a calculated guess), to have died before 1887 in NSW - possibly He was .608 Joseph Harris was granted a Ticket of Leave about 1818. He worked as a servant to Lt Col Johnson *for seven years and then granted 50 Acres of land.

* Lt Colonel Johnson was a soldier in the NSW Corp and was the officer responsible for putting down the "Vinegar Hill Revolt" by a number of disaffected, mainly Irish convicts who planned to abscond to their homes. It has been claimed that this Joseph Harris and his wife Esther nee Blades were the parents of Joseph Henry Harris who died at Wentworth 2nd April 1897.

This could well be true but serious consideration must be given to some lack of information and inconsistencies in dates etc.

NSWBDM records indicate that Joseph & Esther (the convicts) had a total of four children. Esther b 1815, Joseph b 1818, Cuthbert Joseph b 1821 & James b 1824 . No further records can be found for the child Esther. It is claimed Cuthbert Joseph became just Joseph .... this assumes the first Joseph died young ( no record) .
It seems also that Esther nee Blades died about 1828 ( no record found) because Joseph requested his two children ( boys) aged 6 & 4 [ Joseph & James] be admitted to Orphan school because his wife had died and he could not longer care for them.
What happened to Esther & Joseph? It is claimed that Esther was employed as she would have been about 13 by that time. Margaret Lyall provided the following "Servant to Margaret Rogers, King St. Sydney."
However the 'other' .... 'original' Joseph born 1818 has 'disappeared' .

The story goes that Joseph Henry ( later of Wentworth) married Sophia Sargent in 1849 at Picton. The Marriage Certificate is not helpful but states Joseph's usual residence was Yass. There are no ages, parents etc. listed on the certificate.
While I could not find any records the family claims that there were two children to this marriage; Mary and Esther. There is no doubt that two people, Mary & Esther were in Wentworth NSW at the time of the death of 'a' Joseph Henry Harris - not Cuthbert .... and Henry has been added !
[Cuthbert Joseph Harris became Joseph Henry Harris ! ]

4508/1876 NEIGHBOUR JAMES HARRIS MARY WENTWORTH and Esther married a gentleman named Lay aka Ley .
The question remains as to whether their mother was Sophia Sargent . The names Esther & Sophia persist which may or may not mean anything.

One source claims Joseph, Sophia Sargent and the two girls travelled to South Australia ( following Sophia's parents ) and for a time lived in Gawler.
It was here that Joseph married Lavinia Gotty in the early 1860's.
South Australian index of births Deaths and Marriages have no record of the 'presumed' death of Sophia Harris nee Sargent. Maybe they never married !
It is further asserted that they travelled to Wentworth and in 1864 their first child was born.

In spite of all of these missing records we could continue to assume that this Joseph Henry was the son of Joseph & Esther nee Blades but now we find another important inconsistency .... on the death Certificate of Joseph Henry Harris in 1897 it claims his age as 89 years. If that is true he was born in 1808 not 1821 as was Cuthbert Joseph Harris.
The following are possibles:
1. The age on the Death Certificate is incorrect. Or he didn't know his age.
If he was 79 he would have been born in 1818 .... when the original Joseph was born !
2. The age is correct and this Joseph Henry is not the son of Convict Joseph Harris & Esther blades.

Joseph Henry's headstone does not list an age.

I am not claiming that the connections to the Harris Family in Wentworth are not as claimed. However, there is a serious lack of documentation I can uncover which supports the argument.

StPhillips Church - Sydney
In January 1788 eleven ships and their companies, under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip RN, and carrying around 1400 people, including 759 convicts, arrived on the east coast of what is now Australia to establish a penal colony. The Chaplain of this, the First Fleet, was the Rev Richard Johnson and he conducted the first Christian service in Australia on 3 February 1788.

The wattle and daub church built by Johnson in 1793 was burnt down in 1798. A new stone church named St Philip’s was opened in 1810, and this was replaced by the current building in 1856.

The Rev Cowper, Archdeacon, St Phillips Church, who married Joseph & Esther arrived in 1809 and died in 1858. He was a significant and at one point the only religious figure in NSW.
William Cowper wrote to the Governor of NSW requesting a land grant for joseph Harris. He stated that Harris had been a servant of (the late) Lt Col Johnson for seven years . "Has a wife and children & would want to settle on any land he was given. ( Reel 6064 p 439)

In the early colony, marriages were of two kinds, either by licence or by the publication of banns. As the fees were comparatively high, ?4.4.0, only the more affluent members of the community married by licence. The licence was granted by the Governor as there was no Bishop of the Church of England in the colony.

Most marriages followed the publication of the banns in a church on three successive Sundays. Convicts were married by banns having first obtained the Governor's permission. NSW State Records:

Caroline HARRIS (HUMPHRIS) was born in 1856 in Unknown. No records have been found. Julie Humphris passed on a claim by Joyce Barton ( Humphris connection ) that Caroline was born Ballarat East 17th Feb 1860. Victorian records [searched Jan 2010] do not list her. Her age would be incorrect if she was born at Ballarat on the above date.
On Caroline's death record her parents are listed as Frederina & John J
4004/1891 HUMPHRIES CAROLINE JOHN J FREDERINA BROKEN HILL
'all parties ' say this is incorrect. There was also a claim that she was born at Gol Gol ( near Wentworth ... other side of the Murray river from Mildura )

[ Note: It was my earlier contention ... Trent Niemann ... that Caroline was the daughter of Joseph Henry's brother James .... but have no evidence to support this notion ! ] She died on 22 January 1891 at the age of 35 in Broken Hill NSW.625 She was buried on 23 January 1891 in Broken Hil NSW.626 It has been difficult to 'pin down' exact details for Caroline Harris (Humphris)
No birth record has been found, the Marriage Record lacks many details and the Death Certificate appears to contain some errors in fact: 1. Mother's first name 2. Age when married
There are a few pieces of the Death Certificate I cannot make out. The first thing is that Death Certificates are notoriously inaccurate especially if it is a non-immediate family completing the details. If the informant is illiterate the clerk can write anything ..... Frederina ... Lavinia ???
There are some puzzles: Frederina Gotte should read Lavinia Gotte
Claimed she was 23 when married but if she was born 1856 (no birth record found )she was 21; but 1891 less 35 years = 1856, which seems to confirm the 21 age .

Unfortunately the marriage record has many gaps as well. Why would you NOT include some of the basic details as in "Not Stated "
I think 'Petoria' should read Pekina [ I could not find a Petoria in SA ]
Esther Lay [witness] was her sister

I suspect [just a hunch ]her marriage may not have been done with full family support; I suspect also that Willoughby Humphris and Caroline were both illiterate, resulting in factual errors in records.
